The long term political trend towards devolution of power is often accompanied by claims that many more people nowadays want to be involved in action that will help them create their own futures. With a growing focus on ‘Big Society,’ notions of  ’localism’, and the concept of ‘power to the people,’ many local authorities and public sector organisations are now focussing more strongly on community engagement and community development. These concepts can be supported by local community networking, blending on and offline interactions. The following model is a first step to illustrating how this can be organised and put into practice at local authority level.

The local authority website acts as a hub with social media spokes developing alongside connections to on and offline groups and individuals locally.
